Such sectors are hard or impossible to read and are not suitable for storing data.<br \/><strong>Bit:<\/strong> The smallest unit of information handled by a computer.<br \/><strong>Byte:<\/strong> A sequence of 8 binary digits.<\/p><h3><span class=\"subtitle\"><a id=\"c\"><\/a><strong>C<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p><strong>CPU:<\/strong> Central Processing Unit \u2014 the primary component that executes instructions.<\/p><h3><span class=\"subtitle\"><a id=\"cs\"><\/a><strong>CS<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p><strong>Interface (connector):<\/strong> The data transfer interface; common types include ATA (PATA), SATA (SATA I\/II\/III), SCSI, SAS (Serial Attached SCSI), USB, etc.<\/p><h3><span class=\"subtitle\"><a id=\"d\"><\/a><strong>D<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p><strong>Disk Encryption:<\/strong> Technology that encrypts data on a storage device so that it is unreadable without the proper key.<\/p><h3><span class=\"subtitle\"><a id=\"e\"><\/a><strong>E<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p><strong>ECC:<\/strong> Error-Correcting Code used to detect and correct data corruption.<\/p><h3><span class=\"subtitle\"><a id=\"f\"><\/a><strong>F<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p><strong>File system:<\/strong> To store files on a hard drive, the computer needs a file system that records names, locations and structure (similar to a catalog). Each partition has its own allocation table: <b>F<\/b>ile <b>A<\/b>llocation <b>T<\/b>able (<a href=\"https:\/\/adatvissza.hu\/en\/szotar\/#f\">FAT<\/a>) or <b>M<\/b>aster <b>F<\/b>ile <b>T<\/b>able (MFT). Early PCs used FAT16 under DOS, followed by FAT32 (Windows 95\/98). Later, <a href=\"https:\/\/adatvissza.hu\/en\/szotar\/#n\">NTFS<\/a> (New Technology File System) became standard for Windows NT-based systems. Unix\/Linux systems use different file systems. NTFS advantages over FAT include support for files larger than 4 GB. Supported file systems include: FAT, exFAT, NTFS, EXT2\/3\/4, HFS+, UFS1\/2, XFS, ReiserFS, VMFS and virtual disk images (VMDK, VHD).<br \/><strong>FAT:<\/strong> <strong>F<\/strong>ile <strong>A<\/strong>llocation <strong>T<\/strong>able \u2014 an OS-maintained table tracking where files are stored. Variants include FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32.<br \/><strong>Firmware:<\/strong> A small program stored in a device\u2019s ROM that enables the <a href=\"https:\/\/adatvissza.hu\/en\/szotar\/#h\">hardware<\/a> to operate. Manufacturers release updates (firmware updates) to add features or improve stability\/performance.<br \/><strong>Flash:<\/strong> Flash or <a href=\"https:\/\/adatvissza.hu\/en\/szotar\/#n\">NAND<\/a> flash. Non-volatile memory technology that can be electronically erased and reprogrammed. Used in memory cards, USB flash drives and <a href=\"https:\/\/adatvissza.hu\/en\/szotar\/#s\">SSDs<\/a>.<br \/><strong>Formatting:<\/strong> Preparing a storage device\u2019s data area for use by creating the necessary file system structures. Many USB drives and memory cards are factory-formatted for immediate use.<\/p><h3><span class=\"subtitle\"><a id=\"g\"><\/a><strong>G<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p><strong>GB:<\/strong> Gigabyte: 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/adatvissza.hu\/en\/szotar\/#b\">bytes<\/a>.<\/p><h3><span class=\"subtitle\"><a id=\"h\"><\/a><strong>H<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p><strong>Hardware:<\/strong> The physical components of a computer, such as graphics card, sound card, motherboard devices (onboard audio, LAN, storage and video controllers), etc.<\/p><h3><span class=\"subtitle\"><a id=\"i\"><\/a><strong>I<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p><strong>Interface mode:<\/strong> The protocol\/standard a device uses on the connector (e.g., AHCI, NVMe).<\/p><h3><span class=\"subtitle\"><a id=\"j\"><\/a><strong>J<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p><strong>JBOD:<\/strong> \u201cJust a Bunch Of Disks\u201d \u2014 multiple disks presented as separate volumes (non-RAID).<\/p><h3><span class=\"subtitle\"><a id=\"k\"><\/a><strong>K<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p><strong>Kilobyte (KB):<\/strong> 1 KB = 1,000 bytes (decimal) in storage device marketing.<\/p><h3><span class=\"subtitle\"><a id=\"l\"><\/a><strong>L<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p><strong>Logical sector:<\/strong> The addressable block size the OS uses (commonly 512 bytes or 4096 bytes).<\/p><h3><span class=\"subtitle\"><a id=\"m\"><\/a><strong>M<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p><strong>MB:<\/strong> Megabyte: 1 MB = 1,000,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/adatvissza.hu\/en\/szotar\/#b\">bytes<\/a>.<br \/><strong>MBR:<\/strong> <strong>M<\/strong>aster <strong>B<\/strong>oot <strong>R<\/strong>ecord \u2014 bootstrap code and partition table sector read when a disk is attached\/booted. Located in the first <a href=\"https:\/\/adatvissza.hu\/en\/szotar\/#sz\">sector<\/a> of the disk\u2019s first track; may contain device-specific data.<br \/><strong>Memory Stick:<\/strong> A memory card format introduced by Sony in 1998 (variants: Memory Stick, Duo, Pro, HG, Micro).<br \/><strong>Memory chip:<\/strong> An electronic component for data storage, used in USB drives, SSDs and memory cards.<br \/><strong>Hard disk:<\/strong> A rigid magnetic disk coated with a magnetizable layer (magnetic disk).<br \/><strong>Hard Disk Drive (HDD):<\/strong> Stores data on spinning magnetic platters read\/written by heads \u201cflying\u201d above the surface. Key specs: capacity, read\/write speeds, spindle RPM and interface.<br \/><strong>MFT:<\/strong> Master File Table \u2014 the primary metadata database used by NTFS to track files and directories.<br \/><strong>Monolith:<\/strong> Monolithic flash package where the <a href=\"https:\/\/adatvissza.hu\/en\/szotar\/#v\">controller<\/a>, memory chip(s) and supporting components are in a single encapsulated body (e.g., many microSD cards).<\/p><h3><span class=\"subtitle\"><a id=\"n\"><\/a><strong>N<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p><strong>NAND flash:<\/strong> See <a href=\"https:\/\/adatvissza.hu\/en\/szotar\/#f\">Flash<\/a>.<br \/><strong>NTFS:<\/strong> <strong>N<\/strong>ew <strong>T<\/strong>echnology <strong>F<\/strong>ile <strong>S<\/strong>ystem \u2014 Microsoft\u2019s standard file system for Windows NT and later. Adds metadata support and advanced structures, improving speed and reliability over <a href=\"https:\/\/adatvissza.hu\/en\/szotar\/#f\">FAT<\/a>.
